Introducing the Veterinary Technician Registered Apprenticeship Program

Cascade Veterinary Clinics (CVC) is addressing critical workforce shortages in North Central Washington with the nation’s first employer-sponsored and registered Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) Apprenticeship Program. This three-year program combines 6,000 hours of paid, hands-on training with 766 hours of supplemental instruction, preparing apprentices for the national LVT licensing exam. Designed to meet the rapidly growing demand for skilled veterinary technicians—expected to increase by 30% in Washington by 2032—the program provides participants with a direct pathway to rewarding careers while creating a reliable talent pipeline for veterinary practices.

This innovative model demonstrates the power of employer-driven solutions in workforce development. By tackling the “training desert” in rural areas and aligning with state and national licensing requirements, CVC has created a replicable program that strengthens recruitment, diversifies the workforce, and advances the veterinary profession. The initiative, supported by a Career Connect Washington Program Builder grant, highlights how collaboration between industry, education, and community stakeholders can transform workforce challenges into sustainable career pathways.
